Gettysburg National Battlefield and Museum

For Mommy's very first AWS day she planned to spend the day at Gettysburg with Pappy. Mommy was a little unsure as to whether it would be good to take Wyatt too but since it was a wide open space to run in it was decided Wyatt should come along. Wyatt did such a great job and was such an adoreable little historian. He listened so well the whole time and he seemed really interested in the monuments. It was a great place to take Wyatt to learn and play and it was the perfect day since it wasn't too hot.
Pappy and Wyatt getting ready to take a tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield. A quick picture of some of the battlefield:
Standing in the center of the battlefield, Pappy takes a minute to explain the battle to Wyatt and Wyatt listens intently:

This is Mommy's favorite part of the battle Pickett's (and Pettigrew's) Charge:

Pappy and Wyatt take a walk on the battlefield (Union side):

This was one of the funniest parts of the trip, Wyatt fell in love with the statue of Gen. George Meade. He would run up the hill and stare at him and then run back down and then turn around and run right back up. He would touch the statue and waive to the General and then pose for a picture. This went on for several minutes (I have many many pictures of Wyatt and this statue now), then he ran up to the statue and started marching in front of it:

Pappy and Wyatt take a break un front of the Commander Monument (this had a listing of the Commanders who were lost in the battle of Gettysburg.) Wyatt looks so proud sitting there with Pappy.

Wyatt had fun playing under the artiltary cart, well until he bumped his head:

The last survivor of the Grand Army of the National Republic statue, Wyatt was really into this one:

We were very surprised when there was a huge brand new museum at Gettysburg. It was far bigger than the museum Mommy ditched school to go to on her Seinor skip day. Here is Wyatt and Pappy in front of the museum sign. Wyatt seemed to favor the Union calvary (looks like Custer would have had himself another man). Here was where Wyatt started speaking gibberish a mile a minute and showing people the display, he was quite the tour guide (sorry it is so blurry, Wyatt was so excited he tore through the museum pointing to things and then running to the next until he tripped and fell into the South Carolina Flag display- no worries no one was hurt and no debts were incurred):

Next on our tour, an example of the military encampment:
A representation of a Confederate uniform, Wyatt was far more interested in the Union:

Wyatt and Pappy looking at the Union soldier's uniform. Wyatt was fascinated:

Wyatt had so much fun he decided to join the Union forces (we kept the hat and figured we will go back for the gun in a couple more years):

I think all three of us had a blast at Gettysburg and there was so much to see we didn't even get to do it all (sounds like we may have to plan another trip up there). After the museum we drove over to Little Roundtop and took a look at the Joshua Chamberlain statue (Mommy always liked him and his funny mustache). Since Wyatt was sleeping we decided not to get out of the car but just to do a little driving tour. It was so great to see Wyatt taking an interest in history especially at this young age. He just loved every minute of it. He insisted we stop at every monument so Mommy jokingly said "Good thing we didn't take him to the National Cemetery we would have had to stop at each gravestone".

There is still so much more to see and I know we can't wait to go back, it was the perfect way to spend the day!

We have a driving tour of Gettysburg on CD if you ever want to borrow it. It's great b/c it's self-paced and there are lots of opportunities to get out and explore. we were just there last week, too :)

Awesome that sounds great! My dad and I are sort of history buffs so we are always looking to go up to Gettysburg. It is such an amazing battle and the battlefield is so pretty. The new Visitor's Center just blew us away. It was a great way to share our love of history with Wyatt (before he is old enough to get bored- LOL)
