Today Nonna, Daddy, Mommy, and Wyatt went to Arlington National Cemetery where Wyatt Great-Grandfather, Nonna's Daddy, is buried. It is a huge honor to be buried there because only
veterans can be buried there. It was a beautiful day, a great way for us to learn about Wyatt's Great Grandfather on his birthday, and to honor those who have given so much for our country.
Here is Daddy, Nonna and Wyatt near his grave. Daddy is named after him:
The cemetery was very peaceful and it is so powerful to see all the people who are buried there and imagine that they were once in a war in America's history. Nonna's Daddy fought in the
European Theatre in World War II in 1945. Even though he didn't have to go he wanted to go and help his country in this great cause.
We also went to visit Nonna's Uncle and Aunt who are also buried here. With all this amazing history around we decided to tour the grounds.
The land which Arlington National Cemetery was built on was originally owned by George Washington Parke Custis who was the adopted son of George Washington. G.W.P. Washington built the Mansion on the property as a sort of museum so that people could come and see mementos of George Washington and America's birth. G.W.P. Washington left the mansion to his daughter Mary Custis who moved into the mansion with her husband, Robert E. Lee. (what a historian's dream how these two prominent revolutionary families join in marriage so many years later when America was just about to have another huge breakthrough). At the onset of the Civil War it was advised that Mary Custis quietly gather up her father's collection of Washington memoriabile. Shortly after the Union seized the Custis-Lee mansion. The dead Union soldiers were piling up and there was no where for them to bury their dead. Union Major General Meigs, who held a huge grudge against Lee for refusing the Union command at the start of the war and choosing to fight for the South over preserving the Union, suggested that they use Lee's grounds to buy their dead. Robert E. Lee never returned to the Custis-Lee mansion. And In 1892 Union Major General Meigs was buried there.
Perhaps one of the most beautiful scenes in Arlington is the resting place of John F. Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy and their two children. They call it The Eternal Flame. It was amazing I learned here what strength Jackie Kennedy really had. Apparently she lost an infant child in August of 1963 and then lost her husband just a few months later.
The tomb of the unknown soldiers being guarded. It was a breath-taking sight as you stood on the steps and the landscape in front of you was all of Washington, DC.
There were a lot of quiet zones and I must say for a toddler Wyatt did quite well at observing them but I think about 5 minutes into the tomb of the unknown soldiers Wyatt got a little restless.
So Nonna and Wyatt took a walk around while Daddy went to get the car.
Wyatt and Nonna even played a very challenging game with the benches.
Afterward we went to Georgetown and had dinner at Johnny Rockets and then took a peaceful walk around the C&O Canal.
where Wyatt got to see all the ducks.
It was quite a day and something that Daddy and Mommy thought would make a great tradition.
