After driving around the town of Manassas we decided to visit the battlefield and go through the first battle of Manassas. We knew in a second Wyatt would be in Heaven because the very first thing you see from the Visitor's Center parking lot is the statue of Gen. Stonewall Jackson on his horse.
Here we go again... Mommy shared with Wyatt the significance of Stonewall Jackson in the battle of Manassas and how it was in this battle where he earned his nickname "Stonewall". The monument reads, "There stand Jackson like a great stonewall"
Then Wyatt shared the information with Daddy.
Daddy and Wyatt keep looking at the cannon waiting for something to happen. It's not real guys I promise... Daddy and Mommy just loved the way this battlefield looked. Daddy joked and said he would like to put a house right in the middle over looking the mountains. (Can you imagine the ghosts we would have then?) It was truly breathtaking as the sun was slowly going down to look over the battlefield and to imagine all those men standing there so many years ago.

Daddy and Wyatt overlooking part of the battlefield. You can almost here the Rebel Yell coming from behind where I am standing. That must have been quite a site just when the Union thought they had won the battle and as the smoke from the battle clears hearing all those men screaming and charging toward you with Jackson just sitting there on his horse completely unmoveable.
Which has a better ring to it Future Historical Society or Children Historical Enthusiasts? Here is the Henry House where an old lady who had been bed ridden and could no longer tend to her farm lived. The lady refused to leave the house despite the battle that was about to ensue and she ended up being killed by the artillery meant for the sharpshooters who were stationed in the house. The battle just destroyed the house but here is it restored and in the back she is buried with her family.
Wyatt was happy to see other kids his age touring the battlefield. There were two kids actually but as I was taking the picture below the kid in the red shirt (above) wandered away and then started climbing the fence that surrounds the Memorial for the fallen Union soldiers. He almost made it over before Mommy snatched him right down. I wondered if the three were in it together like those two distract the adults while this one runs away to see what he could get into, good one guys.

I don't know what is with the drama on Wyatt's face here, maybe he was just sad he had to leave. We figured that before we did leave we would take a quick family photo in front of this beautiful background.

The battlefield was great and was the perfect place for Wyatt to stretch his legs and run around. Mommy wasn't as good of a tour guide as Pappy though because she couldn't remember everything that happened just where Union was (kind of), where conferederates were, and then that they ended up meeting in the middle. We said we ould have to go back with Pappy so we could get more info and take a full tour around.
On the drive back from Manassas we decided to take White's Ferry across the Potomac from Virgina into Maryland. It took us a while to get out of the car because there were these huge spiders on the side of the Ferry. We were so fascinated by them we didn't even know the Ferry was moving. We got out at the perfect time, the sun was setting just beautifully and on one side it was day and the other almost night...totally cool.

It was a great night and the perfect impromptu trip- something for everyone!
